Good Examples
The approaches to sustainable urban mobility planning vary quite widely throughout Europe. The Baltic Sea Region Competence Centre on SUMP brings together the knowledge and good examples of sustainable urban mobility planning from the countries around the Baltic Sea.
The Good Examples database includes examples of complete plans that can be considered as SUMPs as well as examples of different elements of the mobility planning process that are relevant for SUMPs. Both, cities with a lot of experience with integrated planning approaches and cities initiating the SUMP process can learn from the examples.
Accessibility studies conducted in the Helsinki Region helped to develop a Transport System Plan to support the use of more sustainable modes of transport and set the framework for future development.
The Helsinki region, covering nearly 1.5 million people and 14 municipalities, developed a transport system plan for improving the public transport.
The HLJ 2015 Framework Program, based on the earlier version of the plan, HLJ2011, sets out the framework and priorities for more detailed planning and preparation of the next Helsinki Region Transport Plan.
In the Kouvola Region of Finland, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan was also linked to the regional, the state level and EU policies. During the process an inter-sectoral working group was set up.
The EKOLIITU plan was among the first plans in Finland to integrate the sustainable mobility perspective into traditional traffic safety plans. The plan promotes a safer, healthier and a more sustainable mobility in the Hämeenlinna region consisting of three municipalities in southern Finland.
